Overview

Location – Wilayat Al Buraimi lies in the north western corner of the Sultanate on the borders of the United Arab Emirates, approximately 375 Km from Muscat.

Historical Facts/Sights – A number of ruins exist in Al Buraimi, with a number of castles and forts attracting history buffs from all over, including the Fort of Al Khandaq, the emblem of the wilayat, considered an exemplary model of a strategic defence system, adopted in bygone years to protect the cities. Another worthwhile port of call is the Al Hillah Fort, which was recently restored by the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture, as was the Fort of Al Khandaq.

Farming is the main profession here, relying heavily on water from wells and aflaj for irrigation.

Al Buraimi

Al Sinainah
Location – Recently upgraded from a Niyabat to a wilayat, Al Sinainah is now the 61st wilayat of the Sultanate of Oman and lies more than 300 Km from the country’s capital city of Muscat.

Mahdah
Location – At a distance of approximately 351 Km from Muscat, wilayat Mahdah is bordered by wilayat Al Buraimi and the United Arab Emirates to the South.

Natural Sights – Mahdah is home to Wadi Sharm, Wadi Al Qahafi, the Districts of Al Laj, Aboul, Al Abailah, Al Jazeerah and Jabal Al Howraa.

Historical Facts/Sights – The Castle of Sharm, the Fort of Aboul, the Fort of Bait Al Nad and the Fort of Al Khabib, are all significant historical features of this Wilayat.

From Mahdah emerged the first Arab Ambassador to the United States of American, in 1840, Ahmed Bin Na’man Al Ka’abi.

The people of Mahdah are proficient in the arts of spinning thread, weaving and palm leaves handicrafts.
